「心配、不安」を意味するこの言葉を
聞かない日はないくらい
翻弄されているアメリカです。
大統領選がどうなるか、
自分でコントロールできないものからは
一旦距離を置いて、
今日は独立学校区長から昨晩届いたメールを
みなさんにご紹介したいと思います。
この画像をFBで見てウケましたが、
これだけ二極化している米国社会です。
どちら側も自分が「正しい！」と思っている社会で
中立を保ちながら教師をするのはとても難しいことが
皆さんご想像に難くないと思います。
今まででしたら、
大統領選や
Three Branches of Law (三権分立)が行う
日々の決定やニュースは
実社会を学べる格好の学習教材でしたが、
今では
「触るな、危険」マークが
べったり貼られている状態。
取り上げるには相当慎重な扱いが必要な
イシューになってしまいました。
今年の１回目の大統領とバイデンのディベートもそうでしたが、
特に2016年の大統領選挙での
ヒラリークリントンとドナルドトランプの
ディベートは聞くに耐え難く、
信じられない思いでいっぱいでした。
（日本でしたので、
確かYoutubeのライブか動画でみました）
それまで学校の宿題で
「プレジデンシャルディベートをテレビで見るように。
明日みんなで意見交換します。」
という課題が出せたものが、
三回あるディベートのうちの１回目を聞いた先生が、
「あの内容はとても生徒には見せられない。
宿題はなし！」となったというような
話を聞いたことがあります。
家族、職員へのメッセージ
話を現在に戻します。
選挙の前日の11月2日、
不安を抱える生徒や職員、そして家庭をまとめる長として
独立学区長が全家庭にメッセージを送りました。
私たちが住んでいるFort Bend 郡で一番大きい組織が
Independent School District 独立学校区です。
以前のブログにも書きましたが、
税収と予算は地方自治体から独立しているのが
テキサスの学校区の特徴ですので、
この学区長は
教育者でありながら、
相当レベルの大企業のCEOでもあるわけです。
そんなDr. Dupreからのメッセージを
是非皆さんにシェアさせていただきます。
大統領選の結果によっては暴動などの心配もあり、
それらを考慮に入れた上でのメッセージということを
前置きとしてお伝えします。
訳はかなり雑です。
とにかく今日中に届けないと、と思ったので
お許し下さい。
This message is being sent to parents of all students in Fort Bend ISD.
Parents,
Tomorrow is Election Day. In addition to the stress of a world pandemic, our country is experiencing heightened emotions due to divisive racial conversations and polarizing political views.
This is not the first time our country has been so divided on leadership. In 1800, Vice President Thomas Jefferson defeated incumbent President John Adams. The election was described by historians as bitter and riddled with slander and personal attacks.
We will soon learn who will be the next president of the United States. Regardless of the outcome, Fort Bend ISD will continue our commitment to educate our students and provide them with a safe and supportive learning environment.
このメッセージは学区に通う生徒の保護者向けにお送りしています。
保護者各位
明日は選挙日です。世界的なウィルスの流行に加え、人種の分断や二極化する政治的見地で私たちの国は大きな動揺に晒されています。
私たちの国が指導者を選ぶにあたってこのように分断されたのは初めてではありません。1800年、トーマスジェファーソン大統領が当時現職のジョンアダムスを破った時のことです。歴史家は個人的な中傷や攻撃にまみれた苦々しい選挙戦だったと述べています。
次の大統領が誰になるか、間もなくわかるでしょう。結果がどうであれ、私たち学校区は生徒達を教育する責任と、安心なサポート体勢のある学習環境を提供することをお約束します。
My expectation is that our staff will teach our students in a balanced and unbiased manner and that our students will treat each other with respect and grace. Negative actions toward those with differing political views will not be tolerated.
As partners in your child's education, it is crucial that we equip our students with a strong educational foundation, but we must also consider the importance of teaching them the responsibilities and duties of being an American; to be informed, active citizens who can work through and accept differences in perspectives without conflict. As one of the most diverse public school districts in the nation, FBISD will continue to inspire and equip students in schools where differences are valued and celebrated.
我らがスタッフは偏見のない、バランスある態度で生徒を指導し、そして全ての生徒はお互いを敬意と思いやりで接することと、私は期待しています。政治的思考が異なる他者に対する否定的な行動は決して許されません。
皆様のお子様の教育に関するパートナーとして、子供達の確固たる教育の基礎を築くことは重要です。しかしながら、対立の中においても様々な違いを受け入れ、行動し続ける一市民としての価値観、またアメリカ国民としての責任と義務を果たすことを教育する大切さについてしかと考えねばなりません。この国の中でも最も多様性のある学校区の一つとして、わが区は「違い」を尊び、たたえるべきものである、と応援し続けます。

"Individually, you can't control who wins the election, but you can control what you do the day after tomorrow.

The President will be in control of running the country but you and only you are in control of running your life. Leadership is important. But one person doesn't make America. We make America."
大統領はこの国の行く末をコントロールするが、あなたの人生をコントロールするのはあなた、あなただけです。指導者は重要だ。しかし一人の人間が国を作るわけではない。私たち一人一人がアメリカという国を作るのだ。
